Fellow Thunderbolt Alumni,
It is with the sincerest regret the Board of Directors have cancelled the VA-176 Thunderbolt reunion for Reston Virginia, 2010. There were several deciding factors that lead us to this decision. First, large corporations like the Hyatt require contracts. Understandably so. When I visited in August, we provided gustimate numbers of 60 attendees. The financial guarantee we needed to commit too was staggering. We only received 20 responses in December from members committing to the reunion. And several were staying with family in the area. We projected the cost per couple for the reunion to be well over one thousand dollars. Many people are still struggling from today’s economic situation, and simply can’t afford this expense.
By coinciding with the Intruder Association, I hoped we could offer IA sponsored social events to our members. Unfortunately, membership was required in the IA to participate in any events. Our group carries very little funds between reunions. Most excess funds at the time of our reunions are used to reduce member costs for social events. The financial exposure to John and I, in committing to Reston, was just too risky.
This does not mean the end of Thunderbolt Reunions. John, Dave and I are committed to having these gatherings as long as there is an interest. We just need to be able to find the most cost effective place that provides the most for our members. We still look forward to having a reunion in 2010. Perhaps in the fall. John will look at several options, and information will follow.
